APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL GRADUATES;

*Please note that moving forward, we will only be considering sponsored residency applications

  1. You must have completed base specialty residency training in Internal Medicine to apply to an Adult Critical Care Medicine Residency Program at the University of Ottawa. If you have completed a base specialty other than Internal Medicine (General Surgery, Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, etc.), the training must have been completed in Canada.

  2. You must have written and passed the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) Part I or the Medical Council of Canada Evaluation Examination (MCCEE).

  3. All non-Canadian citizens who have completed their base specialty residency outside of Canada MUST provide their own funding, from their home country, for the full 2-years of training, regardless of the country they completed their base specialty residency training. In order to train in Ontario, a foreign medical graduate must be officially sponsored by a funding source from their country of origin. Acceptable funding sources are strictly limited to government agencies or health related charitable organizations. Private or personal funds are neither acceptable nor permissible. Before any applications can be sent to the University for consideration, the sponsor must sign a formal agreement with the University of Ottawa. The latter provides both parties with clear written arrangements for training residents and fellows at the University of Ottawa.

The organization must agree to financially support their trainees to the completion of their residency program. Essentially, the sponsoring organization MUST agree to;

  1. Pay, for each of their trainees, the annual tuition fee per year as well as providing the trainee with a salary and benefits. The salary and benefits for residents must be equivalent to the PARO-CAHO Agreement (www.myparo.ca)

  2. Guarantee a position to their trainees once they return to their country of origin upon completion of training in Canada.

Since each agreement is valid for a period of three years, the University of Ottawa will be able to consider any sponsored applications for the duration of the agreement. Please note that signing the agreement does not guarantee that Programs will offer a position to the applicants.

We regret that we are unable to provide you with any funding for any part of your training.

Please note carefully: If admitted into a Training Program at the University of Ottawa, all foreign trainees must undergo a Pre Entry Assessment Program (PEAP) of eight (8) to twelve (12) weeks prior to the commencement of their residency program.

If you are still interested in applying to Adult Critical Care Medicine, your application MUST be uploaded directly to the University of Ottawa website between May 1st and August 31st. Applications are reviewed in September and interviews for selected applicants take place in October. Notification of acceptance into our Program is sent in early November. Note that training starts July 1st the very next year following official acceptance into the Program.

If you have questions regarding the application process or the training program please email Gabrielle Lockhart, glockhart@toh.ca.
